Theory and Hazard Perception Test
Although you can start your driving lessons as soon as you have obtained your Provisional Driving Licence, you cannot book the practical driving test until you have passed the Theory exam, the exam is in two parts, Multiple Choice and Hazard Perception. We can offer help and advice on passing both the Multiple Choice and Hazard Perception Tests, and if required we can enrol you free of charge on Theory Test Pro..

The DSA Theory test for car drivers is split into 2 parts. The multiple choice/response quiz and the hazard perception test.Tim Sheeran Driver Training Theory

Part 1 - The multiple choice/response quiz
The multiple choice / response quiz for car drivers consists of 50 questions. Associated with each question is a list of potential answers. You need to select the correct answer, or indeed answers, by touching the appropriate area of the computer screen. To pass you need to correctly answer 43 out of the 50 questions.

Part 2 - Hazard Perception Test
This part of the theory test will start with a short tutorial video played on the computer screen that will explain how the hazard perception test works and what you are required to do. You would then be shown 14 video clips of approximately one minute each. There will be 15 hazards to find - at least one on each clip. However, one clip will have 2 hazards. The clips will not contain any sound.

Faults are recorded by the examiner during the test and are recorded as minor or major driving faults on the test sheet.

Minor faults are recorded as driving faults and you are allowed up to 15 driving faults. More than three faults on any subject may result in a major fault been awarded.

Major driving faults are recorded as serious or dangerous, with just one major driving fault required to fail.

Tim Sheeran Driver Training Independent DriveIndependent Driving Explained
Your practical driving test now includes a 10 minute section of independent driving.

During your test you will have to drive independently by either following:

  • a series of directions
  • traffic signs
  • a combination of both

To help you understand where you are going, the examiner may show you a diagram it does not matter if you don't remember every direction, or if you go the wrong way, that can happen to the most experienced drivers. Independent driving is not a test of your orientation and navigation skills. Driving independently means making your own decisions, this includes deciding when it is safe and appropriate to ask for confirmation about where you are going.

There are many websites now offering online booking services for driving and theory tests, these sites will charge an administration fee normally around £25.00, so please ensure you are booking direct from the .gov website to avoid further costs.
